Truck crashes into railway bridge

The railway bridge does not have height restriction signs and this could have led to the driver of the truck miscalculating his vehicle's clearance height.

Traffic came to a standstill on 18 June when a container truck crashed into the railway bridge on Nywerheid Street and Main Reef Road.

The railway bridge does not have height restriction signs and this could have led to the driver of the truck miscalculating his vehicle’s clearance height.

Eyewitness Kobus Swanepoel said, “I contact the road agency all the time about this bridge and tell them that there are no height restriction signs visible on it, and that this happens all the time when trucks attempt to clear the bridge”.

The driver of the truck did not want to be named but confirmed that no one was injured in the incident. Only the container that was being carried by the truck was damaged.

Although the railway bridge was also not damaged, it displayed a few visible marks on its underside, raising concerns as to how long it will hold up against trucks crashing into it.
