Guys in blue win trolley race again

For the second time in a row, the Honeydew Police Station scooped first prize in the annual gruelling and yet fun Clearwater Mall and Roodepoort Charity Trolley Race that took place last weekend.

Organised by the Roodepoort Round Table 162i, participants, mostly businesses, were early arrivals at the mall on Saturday, 28 April, to prepare for the race which commenced at 7.30am.

When the time to race finally arrived, Honeydew Police trainees (runners pushing the trolley) did not disappoint in defending last year’s title. Captain Karen Jacobs applauded her team for winning again, saying that the win was a reflection of the fitness of the members of the Police service. “This was just another challenge of fitness and ensuring that our trainees are on the right level to perform their duties. Fitness is very important in the Police. The participants were our new recruits, who came from the college last year,” she said, highlighting also that the team was not made up of last year’s competitors.

The police trainees were followed by participants from Anat Clearwater in second place and by the Cereal Killers in third.

Although only three teams could take podium finishes, other participants such as BCI Security were recognised for their team spirit and Rhino Angels (Harcourt Property) walked away with the best-dressed title.

All winners received prize vouchers from Clearwater Mall.

According to the chairperson of the Roodepoort Round Table, Stefan Haasbroek, the proceeds of the event will be used to support their nominated charity. “We held the event in partnership with Clearwater Mall to raise funds for Matla A Bana (A voice against child abuse) and for our general charity fund,” he explained. He also expressed the organisers’ gratitude towards the various sponsors of the event.
