Advice to businesses on security systems

'It’s always a good time to re-look and reassess your business security needs and ensure that what you have in place adequately meets those needs.'

A recent attempted break-in at a shopping centre in Weltevreden Park prompted Fidelity ADT to advise businesses about the importance of having an effective security system.

According to this nationwide security company, its reaction officers responded to the attempted break-in at about midnight on 25 March. Three thugs tried to break into the centre by climbing over the wall and the electric fence. They tied up the on-duty guard and ripped the beams, which triggered the alarm system, off the wall.

The security officers chased after the suspects and arrested them. They found a spanner in their possession.

Fidelity ADT’s Community Development Manager, Nicholas Govender, subsequently saw the need to advise the business community about an effective security system.

“It’s always a good time to re-look and reassess your business security needs, and ensure that what you have in place meets those needs effectively,” he said

He pointed out that wear and tear on security systems is a reality and regular maintenance and upgrades are a necessity. “As with any technical equipment, especially those exposed to the elements, there will be ageing and wear and tear over time. It is best to address these by regularly maintaining these systems. Even with regular maintenance, however, parts need to be replaced every few years,” he explained.

He said waiting until the system becomes faulty is not a good idea. “Unfortunately, at some small businesses we found that the owners only realise that their security system was not operating when a break-in occured. With regular maintenance and testing this can be avoided.”

He suggested that business owners start with their perimeter security and work inwards. “There are numerous options for perimeter security including access control, walls, gates, electric fencing, beams and the likes. As your first line of defence, it’s essential that your perimeter security is in good condition and checked regularly.”

CCTV systems with remote monitoring are becoming more affordable for small businesses and Govender recommended that business owners look into this option. “Cameras are an excellent deterrent for criminals and with remote monitoring now an option, small businesses don’t need to house a monitoring centre on the premises.”

Burglar bars, security gates and an alarm system linked to a reaction service are vital components of the solution, he added.

Equipping staff with panic buttons and access cards is another element that needs to be addressed and monitored closely. He warns business owners not to become complacent about employees, especially those who may be leaving the business. “Ensure that employees return keys, access codes and remotes to the property if they resign. It is also a good idea to change alarm and access codes from time to time.

“It’s always best to get a professional in to assess your security solution if you are unsure whether it’s adequate. These experts will be able to identify any vulnerable areas and offer the best solutions. Now is a great time to get your security in order and ensure your business is well protected throughout the year,” Govender concluded.
