Councillor to report reckless driving to top officials

Mrubata agreed to assist; however, he continued to cite the issue of a shortage of manpower in the City.

Ward 97 PR councillor, Ralk Bittkau, has vowed to take on the issue of reckless driving with the top City of Johannesburg officials.

This follows complaints from community members who attended the Honeydew Sector Policing Forum meeting on Wednesday, 13 March, at the Strubens Valley United Church.

The issues of heavy vehicles exceeding 5 tons in weight travelling on Doreen Road and taxis travelling in oncoming traffic lanes were some of the serious concerns raised by the community.

“Illegal road use is a major problem. Everyone can attest to taxis driving on the wrong side of the road. I will take this matter up with the MMC for Public Safety Michael Sun and also engage the Mayor, Herman Mashabal,” said Ralph, who requested the Region C Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) superintendent, Wandile Mrubata, to assist him with a motivational letter.

Mrubata agreed to assist; however, he continued to cite the issue of a shortage of manpower in the City. He assured Ralph that the JMPD is still impounding taxis that do not abide by the by-laws of the City.

An address by the Honeydew Police Sector 3 manager, Captain Karen Jacobs, cautioned residents to refrain from risking their lives when they assume something is wrong outside of their properties. “If you hear your dog bark outside, you cannot go out on your own in the middle of the night,” she advised, speaking especially to residents living on plots. She said they should rather contact their security companies to provide assistance.
