Road rules must be obeyed by both motorists and pedestrians

Ensuring the safety of the community

Siyazifukula Learner Transport Association (SLTA) wants to urge pedestrians and motorists to obey the rules of the road, especially when it comes to pedestrian crossings.

In a meeting that was held on Thursday, 7 February, SLTA communicated the importance of drivers stopping when a pedestrian is crossing the road at a pedestrian crossing. As much as drivers should stop for the pedestrians, it is also important for pedestrians to cross directly on the blocks; not before the blocks and not after.

“As a Learner Transport Association, we view this problem in a serious light and we are concerned about the well-being and safety of the community,” said the Chairman, Bheki Ziqubu.

The most common unsafe behaviours found at pedestrian crossings are:

• Motorists speeding over the pedestrian crossing and ignoring the scholar patrollers.

• Failure to adhere to the law, and no regard for road traffic regulations.

“Too many lives have been lost as a result of people taking unnecessary risks, so we wish to encourage all motorists to abide by the rules of the road. Slow down at pedestrian crossings, and stop when a scholar patrol stops you,” Bheki said.

SLTA is a transport association based in the West Rand that deals with transporting learners to and from school. For more information, contact their office on 011 766 2918.
