Reckless driving can cost your life!

Residents of Roodepoort have weighed in on Facebook regarding how safety can be ensured in roads.

The Gauteng Member of the Executive Committee (MEC) for Community Safety, Sizakele Nkosi Malobane, has called on the police to ensure that reckless driving is stopped completely.

Malobane made it clear that drivers’ behaviour should not be influenced by drivers’ desires, and this calls for the intensification of road safety education.

The majority of road fatalities are caused by reckless and negligent driving, as well as driving under the influence of alcohol.

“As a region, we will intensify the patrolling of freeways, streets and public places in clearly marked vehicles in an effort to prevent road traffic violations. I call upon the law enforcement agencies to deal decisively with motorists who continue to disobey the rules of the roads and conduct themselves with impunity,” said Malobane.

Residents of Roodepoort have weighed in on Facebook regarding how safety can be ensured in roads.

This what they had to say:

Anita Watson said “Perhaps better control over minibus taxi drivers. They are not willing to wait for the [traffic] lights to change and drive through at reckless speeds, turning into any lane they need to use for whatever purpose suits them, driving in a lane not even deemed to be for traffic going in the direction they are ([i.e. into] oncoming traffic). Harsher penalties for not adhering to the rules of the road. Every time the traffic light is out at the intersection of Goldman Street and Westlake Road/ Golf Club Terrace, I fear that my son might be killed by a motorist unwilling to allow him [time to safely] cross the road.”

Marita Badenhorst also shared her views: “For one fix the traffic lights [at] Nick Toomey Boulevard and Progress Road. People drive against the traffic in the mornings, not prepared to wait for [their turn to use] the straight [ahead] lane! Wait for the tragedy. This was raised with Roodepoort Record a while back. Do something.”

Umesh Ballaram said: “More speed cameras integrated into red light cameras at most intersections.”

Marilyn Coffen commented: “No matter what gets done, there will always be [people] out there who think the road belongs to them and that rules of the road are meant for others, not them! May you find solutions that will make people sit up and start obeying the rules of the road!”

Roma Chirwa added: “We need more cameras in our roads.”

Nepstar Gaonewe said: “Stop and check [operations] must done more often especially on Fridays till Monday morning. Drunk drivers must be arrested on the spot; licences must be suspended; cars [must] be impounded immediately, and bail hearings must be [held] only on Wednesdays and Thursdays for drinking and driving drivers – that will reduce reckless and negligent driving on our roads.”
