Curro speaks out regarding City of Johannesburg debacle

Curro's statement firmly places the ball back in the City's court.

Curro Holdings has finally come forward to shed further light on their side of the story regarding the allegations that have been made in the last week-and-a-half by the City of Johannesburg.

After several attempts to contact the school for their side of the story, the Northsider has received a statement which brings to light a number of facts that could prove that all the allegations made by the CoJ are incorrect.

The City has thusfar claimed that Curro owes the City R8 million, while also claiming that Curro does not have approved building plans or an occupation certificate.

In an initial holding statement by the school, it claimed that “R2 million has been paid for bulk services, and more than R600 000 for monthly water and electricity” and that they had stamped building approval plans.

Thereafter, the City alleged that the R600 000 which was paid was for an old account which has been decommissioned, and that the school’s final building construction did not conform to the plans which were submitted.

Curro has now come forward to further clarify the situation, revealing their side of the story in detail.

The statement claimed as follows:

“• Curro paid R2 075 754,66 for bulk services on 29 March 2018, which payment was confirmed by City of Johannesburg correspondence dated 15 February 2019

• R652 376,62 was paid for water and electricity since the inception of the school [in] late 2017. These payments were effected on receipt of [the] City of Johannesburg[‘s] generated invoices

• All accounts submitted to us have been settled in full

• Curro invested and paid R12 418 036,23 on external road works to assist the City of Johannesburg road structure

• Of this amount, R4 016 533,59 has been offset against bulk services by the City of Johannesburg

• A further amount of R8 401 502,64 is still owing to Curro by the City of Johannesburg. Curro followed due process, as advised by City of Johannesburg, and this amount is currently under consideration by a committee of the Mayor of Johannesburg.”

The statement further claimed that “In a letter from the City of Johannesburg, dated 2 May 2017, to Curro, the Johannesburg Road Agency stated: ‘The JRA will support an offset against bulk services contribution for the roads upgrading’.”

Curro concluded the statement by saying that they have requested a meeting with the City of Johannesburg, and that they “… will welcome constructive engagement to resolve any outstanding issues”.
