Volunteers help alleviate bad traffic

The Honeydew CPF public relations officer, Jon Rosenberg, reflected on the traffic nightmare one afternoon.

A number of men who have been giving up their afternoons to assist in directing traffic in Weltevreden Park have been hailed by the community.

The personnel, who received heaps of praise, were from the Honeydew Community Policing Forum (CPF) Sector 2, the Panorama Residents Association and the Devon Valley Community. They were praised for their involvement in alleviating traffic congestion on roads affected by the 9th Avenue road closure, a route which joined Weltevreden Park and Fairland.

The route was closed off after its structural integrity was deemed unsafe for motorists by the F46 Randwater pipeline project contractor.

The closure of the road created a nightmare for motorists, especially during peak hours – the reason which led the Good Samaritans in the area to act as traffic controllers.

The Honeydew CPF public relations officer Jon Rosenberg reflected on the traffic nightmare one afternoon. “On Monday evening, 18 February, (the weekend after the road closure) it was a disaster. From JG Strydom Road connecting Cornelius, Rugby and Smit Streets, the traffic was bumper to bumper,” he said.

Jon, who appreciated the gratitude expressed online, said they can only do what they can to assist. “We have limited manpower because the guys I’m doing this with are also volunteers and have jobs to do,” he said, appealing to the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) to intervene, especially in heavily congested areas.

JMPD’s superintendent, Wandile Mrubata, said manpower is always a problem because officers have daily duties which are related to controlling traffic. “The problem about mornings is that we have our own traffic points which include schools, and we also have to deal with riots in various areas,” he explained.

However, he added that he will try to deploy personnel to Weltevreden Park to assist where they are needed.
