A community with a plan to end poverty

A community that is self-sufficient and poverty-free.

The community of Princess informal settlement is on a mission to decreases the high rate of poverty, and they came up with an initiative to start a farming project.

The Boitumelo Farming and Projects Co-Operative is aimed at eradicating poverty within the community. The project is a priority to residents because for most of them this is the only means of putting food on the table and feed their families. Community members who are part of this project attended farming workshops and attained a certificate, however, they wish to be acknowledged by and liaise with the Department of Agriculture.

“With this project we have brought about positive change in the community. We hope that we as a community will be self-sufficient and poverty-free in the near future,” said Boitumelo Farming and Projects Co-Operative chairperson, Bertha Maithotlo.

She also mentioned that they would be truly grateful for a donation of farming tools such as spades, wheel barrows, ploughs, rakes, overalls to wear when working and a fence to put around their crops so that animals can stay out.

The farm is located at 15 Van de Linde Road, Princess. For more information contact Betha on 078 195 5572.
