WARNING: Protests flare up again

Motorists urged to avoid Progress Road

Angry protesters closed off Progress Road and Nick Toomey Boulevard on the afternoon of 18 February.

The protesters are believed to be from the Emhlangeni informal settlement in Grobler Park.

Burning tyres, stones and branches were used to close off the road. They are unhappy with City Power and other role-players who removed illegal connections during the past weekend.

This protest is a continuation of the damaged caused to houses and other property belonging to Grobler Park residents during the weekend.

The situation is volatile and motorists are urged to avoid the area and use alternative routes.

The councillor for Ward 71, René Benjamin, was contacted for comment, but said that she cannot give answers at the moment, as she is waiting for updates from the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department.

The Record also approached City Power for comment, and as soon as this is received an update will follow.
