110 000 jobs created in the City of Joburg.

Johannesburg Mayo, Herman Mashaba, outlines the increases in job creation in the city

Johannesburg has managed to create 110 000 jobs nett, year-on-year. This is according to Executive Mayor of Johannesburg, Herman Mashaba, who issued a statement saying he is happy with the 1,1 per cent decrease in the unemployment rate in the city, recently announced in the Q4 Quarterly labour report released by Stats SA.

This is a complete contrast with the previous administration, which lost 200 000 jobs during its five-year term.

The City has performed well in both the province and the country. However, South Africa experienced a nett loss of 132 000 jobs year-on-year, increasing the overall unemployment rate by 0,7 per cent. Gauteng saw a marginal decrease of 0,1 per cent in the expanded unemployment rate, with a nett increase of 92 000 jobs over the same period.

“The latest jobs statistics for the city show that change is steadily coming to the city and more and more businesses and entrepreneurs have confidence in Johannesburg as South Africa’s economic hub,” said Mashaba.

He added that the multi-party government has worked to introduce a number of new initiatives intended to stimulate Joburg’s economy and, in the process, kick-start a sustained period of growth that will lead to job creation.

“These include the rollout of an opportunity centre which will assist budding entrepreneurs with crucial skills and support for growing their businesses,” Mashaba added.

Eighty-four properties have been released by the city for mixed use development. The Mayor is hoping that more job opportunities will be created by attracting property developers to turn the inner city into a construction site as per his stated mission.
