All uniformed Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) members have been instructed to direct traffic during load-shedding.
According to a press release sent out by Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar, the JMPD spokesperson, the instruction was given by David Tembe, the Chief of the Department, and will be implemented with immediate effect.
“This will include officers from the Speed Unit, K9 Unit, By-law Unit, Equestrian Unit and Traffic Wardens of JMPD. They will be deployed at hot spots to direct traffic during load-shedding, and to help alleviate traffic congestion. Motorists are required to exercise patience at intersections where we will not be able to have officers and to treat such intersections as four-way stops,” he said.
The load-shedding strategy was developed by Chief David Tembe and approved by the City of Johannesburg, and the Chief said, “All points will have to be covered by 6am on a daily basis. Should any JMPD Commander be found wanting in the implementation of this strategy, they then will have to justify their conduct to me.”
