Florida councillor swims for charity

This was his 19th consecutive year swimming the Midmar Mile

The councillor for Ward 70, Caleb Finn, swam two miles for charity during this year’s Midmar Mile, which took place on 9 and 10 February.

This was the 19th consecutive year that he participated in this event. He explained, “I started swimming in support of my nephew, Gregory Andrews in 2012. But, he passed away on 26 December 2012 and from 2013 I started swimming in loving memory of him. This year will be no different.”

He added that he has always tried to swim for charities and has mainly concentrated on those focused on childhood cancer. “This year I have decided to change my focus a little bit, and chose Dorcas Aid as my beneficiary,” he explained.

The reason he chose this particular charity is because of the incredible work they do in the community. Caleb said, “Some of their projects include a soup kitchen feeding the homeless, food garden projects where people are taught how to grow their own food and a computer centre where computer skills are taught. Dorcas Aid International pulled out of several countries at the end of 2016, including South Africa, but the local team decided to carry on the work of Dorcas Aid. Although it has not been an easy journey, Lionel and the team continue to serve with excellence but the organisation is in need of donations in order to keep making progress.”

He said that his preparation has been minimal, and he almost decided not to participate this year. “Between council and political duties I have not found enough time to train. when I finally did find some time to train I got tonsillitis! Fortunately my course of antibiotics will be completed just in time for me to swim, meaning it will be a gentle swim this year.”

He concluded by encouraging others to also participate.

“Open water swimming is a sport without pressure. It gives people time to achieve their goals and objectives and to build themselves up … it also helps that the places we swim are normally out in nature which gives you time to connect with yourself.”
