Date for commencement of South Road project soon to be released

Once that is done, the project engineers will be able to give a date for the commencement of the project to construct a bridge road culvert.

Ward 71 councillor, René Benjamin, recently held a meeting with the project engineers and contractors on the South Road project to finalise its plan and design.

They are also meeting with City Power, Telkom and the Johannesburg Road Agency to request the rerouting of the cables in that specific area.

“These are the same cables that were dug up for the illegal connections that contributed to the continuous power outages experienced by residents. Once that is done, the project engineers will be able to give a date for the commencement of the project to construct a bridge road culvert. For now they are reluctant to provide a specific date; however, it should be during the first term of this year,” René said.

According to René, a public meeting to inform the residents of Ward 71 how many job opportunities this project will provide will be soon be held, and the application process will also be explained.

The project is the result of heavy rainfall in October 2017, which caused a huge sinkhole on South Road, between Hazel Road and Pannevis Street. The road collapsed and was no longer safe for motorists and it was closed.
