Calling on all local heroes

We're looking for local heroes who go above and beyond the day-to-day call of duty.

We are looking to community members from the West Rand to come forward and name the people who have become local heroes by paying it forward.

At the Record, we believe that a simple act of caring can create an endless ripple, and that day-in and day-out residents find themselves faced with the choice to pay it forward, serve their own self-interest, or simply just look the other way and ignore what they have seen. While the majority choose the latter, there are a special few residents who opt to pay it forward and lend a helping hand to someone desperately in need.

We’re not looking for companies who undertake initiatives because they need to boost their corporate social investment and do so for publicity. Instead, we are interested in your plain Jane, your run-of-the-mill resident who went out of his or her way to pay it forward to someone in need, whether they pulled someone from a burning car, or simply rescued a dog stuck down a manhole, like stories about paramedics who go beyond the call of duty, such as those who attempted to save the birds trapped in a lapa fire in Rinyani Avenue two weeks ago. You can submit your stories for consideration via e-mail to roodepoortrecord@caxton.co.za.
