Westrand Toastmasters’ first meeting a roaring success

The theme for the evening was 'Colour'

Members and visitors to the Westrand Toastmasters’ first meeting of the year had to brave some stormy weather, but that did not stop them from making the evening a roaring success.

The theme for meeting number 456 was ‘Colour’ and the word of the evening was ‘Drought’, and everyone present had the opportunity to use both the word and the theme in different contexts.

The meeting was called to order by Sergeant-at-Arms, Ernest Watkins, who was followed by the Club’s President, Esther Dreyer, who welcomed everyone. She used the opportunity to emphasise the importance of visualisation when setting goals, and requested each member and guest, to give an account of their goals for 2019.

Glen Campbell, the Vice President for Public Relations, then had the honour of welcoming six new guests for the evening, before the meeting started in earnest.

Richard van Leeuwen was the Table Topics Master, and he chose four topics for the impromptu speeches: skill, time, socialise and happiness. The award for the Best Impromptu Speech went to Ines Leal, a guest from Roodepoort, who spoke on socialising.

Lynette Harris was the Jokemaster, and she ensured that everyone was kept entertained (and had a lot of laughs) during the evening.

André Diedericks was the General Evaluator, Glenn Campbell was the Grammarian, Esther Dreyer took on the roles of Evaluator and Evaluation Chairman and Claude Joshua was the Timekeeper.

Speeches were presented by Lynette Harris who gave an interpretive reading from William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. She was followed by Alwyn van Wyngaarden who talked about the Natural Law Wonder.

The winners for the evening were as follows:

• Stephanie Watkins (Best Contributor)

•Ines Leal (Best Impromptu Speech)

The next meeting will take place on 7 February, at the Discovery Bowling Club, Lucas Avenue, Discovery. It will start at 6.30pm.
