Helderkruin owners charged with animal cruelty

WARNING: Images might upset sensitive readers. Dogs removed from appalling conditions

“Why do people own dogs if they are going to chain them in the most horrific conditions?” asked an exasperated Mandy Cattanach, manager of the Roodepoort/ Krugersdorp SPCA.

She said that they had received a call on the afternoon of 18 January to a residence where two dogs were kept in appalling conditions. “On arrival at the house in Heldrkruin, our inspectors found two adult dogs chained to a tree. The one dog’s chain had already cut into the poor animal’s neck,” Cattanach said.

The dogs were chained to a tree, and had to live in appalling conditions.

The two dogs were both chained to the same tree, and were entangled around branches and rubbish, and Cattanach said, “They had no water and only old pap to eat, resulting in them having to continually fight for scraps of food. They could not reach the shelter provided and they were forced to lie in their own faeces”.

After being rescued by the SPCA inspectors, the dogs were given some water, which they gulped down greedily.

Cattanach concluded by saying, “It is mind boggling that people own dogs and just chain them up, give them no attention and discard them like objects. What’s the purpose of having a dog if this is how you treat it?”

A case of animal abuse was opened against the owners.

Should a member of the public witness an act of cruelty against an animal, they should not hesitate to contact the SPCA on 011 672 0448.
