Many hands make light work

Councillor Leah knott, together with some city officials and community members, rallied to make a difference on Pierre Road on Saturday, 19 January.

Adopting a culture of cleanliness and getting involved were some the reflections of MMC for Economic Development and Ward 97 councillor, Leah Knott, after the weekend’s clean-up.

Embracing the A Re Sebetseng clean-up initiative by the City of Johannesburg, Leah and a group of city officials and community members rallied to make a difference on Pierre Road on Saturday, 19 January.

After managing to improve the state of Pierre Road with the few that hands that attended, Leah encouraged residents to get involved in future. “Although we started with lots of hands showing up for these clean-ups, I would still like to encourage more residents to participate. We also need to start breeding the culture of keeping our environment clean, because the problem does not lie with the disposal services or lack of pick up in the area; it’s the culture we have of just throwing things onto the ground and not thinking twice about it. I think if we adopt a new attitude, we won’t have piles of rubbish lying on the side of the roads,” she urged.

Apart from the rubbish, disconnected and stolen cables were also found in the area. The area has had a number of successful and attempted cable thefts, with even the attempts damaging the affected cables.

Leah also encouraged residents to be vigilant and to report suspicious activities to the authorities. “The area has recently formed a new neighbourhood watch and we have requested the JMPD and the police to provide more frequent patrols. I encourage people to be vigilant, and be sure that people working in the area are from either Eskom or City Power. If they see random people, they must report the activity to the Risk Department, the JMPD, their local councillor or anybody in authority,” she explained.
