Criminals capitalise on new system at licensing station

Victim suspects criminals have someone inside station working with them.

Criminals have a new take on their old scam at the Roodepoort Licensing Station.

The official new system calls for applicants to book their appointments online and then go to the office to pay the booking fee within four days. The criminals know this and now stop clients outside the premises and tell them they are not allowed to go in but an allocated person will go and conclude the transaction on their behalf. Those unaware of it being a scam hand over their proof of booking slips as well as the money required.

Shortly afterwards the clients would receive a call allegedly from ‘someone in the office’ about an ‘outstanding fine’ and that they should send in more money to pay the fine before the transaction could be concluded. Whether an employee inside or someone else is part of the scam is uncertain, but once the money is handed over, the ‘allocated helper’ disappears.

The Record is in the process of getting comment from the licensing station.
