Eight tips to ensure you are ready on time

Here are some tips to keep your morning routine simple

It used to be very simple to get ready in the morning – stumble out of bed, have a cup of coffee while reading the morning news – then slip into your clothes and head off to work. With time to spare!

But, as life often does, it changed – you got married, added a few children to the equation and your mornings are chaos. Tantrums, mislaid books, spilled cereal and a variety of other tragedies need attention before running out the door and hoping you’ll be on time.

Here are some tips to help you leave the house on time:

1. Make sure you get yourself ready first, before tackling the enormous task of assisting the children. You might have to sacrifice those extra five minutes of sleep, but it will be worth your while.

2. To ensure your mornings are calm, work with your partner – rather than barking orders at each other.

3. It is very important to have a good night’s rest – for you and the children. An average amount of sleep for a pre-schooler is about 10 to 12 hours a day, dropping to 10 as they enter their teenage years.

4. Children will pick up on your moods. If you are stressed, they will become stressed too – making the morning routine so much more difficult. Try to stay calm through all the stuff happening, and your children will probably get ready faster and you will leave the house on time more often than not.

5. A tantrum about one thing or another is inevitable, but the best way to handle it is quickly. Try not to focus on all the drama and it will be over sooner rather than later – ensuring you are out the door and on your way.

6. Make sure to have a bag ready at the door – packed with all the essential stuff for either school, swimming, or other activity.

7. You spend half of your time in the morning making sure the children are fed, dressed and their hair is brushed. Teach them to do these things for themselves and your mornings will go smoother and your time will be managed more successfully.

8. All parents should know a trick or two to help their children get moving. One sure way is to grab your keys and handbag and go to your car. The children will move with lightning speed if they think you will leave them at home.
