Over-indulged? Here are some cures for the morning after

Beware of the hair of the dog.

Even if you are usually a moderate drinker, you could get carried away in the revelry of a New Year’s party and end up with what we South Africans call a babelaas.

Here are some hangover remedies that you might want to keep posted to the fridge or the toilet seat:

• Drink plenty of water. Alcohol dehydrates you, which is one of the main reasons you feel like you’ve been dragged to hell and back. Although water won’t make your hangover disappear instantly, it will speed up your recovery. Drink water before, during and after the party.

• Drink drinks that will replenish your electrolytes, for instance, sports drinks, but avoid the fizzy energy drinks.

• Eat greasy foods before the party. This will allegedly slow down the rate at which the alcohol is absorbed.

• Eat sugar during the party. This will speed up your metabolism which would lower the risk of a hangover.

• Have breakfast. But beware of greasy foods the morning after. Rather go for some toast or cereal.

• Eat ginger. Ginger reduces nausea and vomiting.

• Go back to bed. Although lack of sleep is not the cause of your hangover, sleeping is nature’s way of healing your body.

• Take pain medication such as aspirin or ibuprofen.

And a final warning – there is no scientific proof that the ‘hair of the dog’ cure works. In other words, having another drink the morning after might not do you any good at all.
