South Road update – The good news and the bad news

Project could take up to 18 months to complete

For over a year, the South Road closure has been a hot topic, especially for the residents of Lindhaven and those who frequently used South Road as their transport route.

According to Ward 71’s councillor, René Benjamin, there is good and bad news. The good news is that JRA received the water use licence from the National Department of Water in October this year, allowing JRA to commence with the process of appointing a contractor for the project. JRA would like to commence with the project at the end of January 2019.

However, the bad news is that there are City Power cables that run under South Road, exactly where the reconstruction of the road is due to take place. JRA has completed the process of requesting City Power to reroute these cables, and City Power will have to work on this prior to the commencement of the JRA project. The project engineer, Dinesh Chithoo, has indicated that the project could take up to 18 months to complete and that part of the road will remain closed and should not be used.

The project will also see the traffic diversion plan put into place with the necessary signage and diversion routing to assist residents and motorists to clearly identify the alternate route that will be part of the project.

“Once the cable issue has been sorted out, and the JRA team is ready to proceed with the project, as councillor for the Ward, I will call a public meeting at which JRA will address the community on the project as well as job opportunities flowing from this project,” René said.
