Avoid being knocked out by the sun this Summer

To avoid an incident of passing out and sustaining injuries, Denver suggested that people stay in cool areas and protect their bodies.

While scorching hot temperatures are expected to be the norm this festive season, a local paramedic cautioned about the risks of passing out due to the heat.

QRS paramedic, Denver Ramnarain, issued the warning, sharing some vital tips after a man collapsed near a shopping centre in Honeydew this week, apparently due to the extreme heat on that day.

Despite the few showers of rain lately, the temperatures are expected to rise still further, reaching highs in the mid-30s in Gauteng. Such high temperatures could lead to heat exhaustion in individuals with weak immune systems. To avoid an incident of passing out and sustaining injuries, Denver suggested that people should stay in cool areas and protect their bodies.

“The summer heat is here and there are always risks of people passing out and injuring themselves. First of all, people need to stay in shaded areas and keep hydrated at all times,” he said, recommending that they drink at least two litres of water a day to protect their bodies.

For those who are forced to work in the sun, Denver recommended the application of sun damage prevention products. “Avoid sunburn by wearing sunblock, and this will also help reduce the risk of dehydration,” he said.

However, if you feel dizzy and weak, he said, “Don’t hesitate to call an emergency line for help”.
