Henceforth, the minimum admission requirement is a National Senior Certificate (NSC) with:

• A minimum of 30 per cent in the language of learning and teaching of the higher education institution as certified by Umalusi.

• An achievement rating of 50–59 per cent or better in four 20-credit NSC subjects.

A 20-credit NSC subject is a subject recognised for the seven-subject NSC package.

Previously matric learners would have to have passed four subjects from a designated list of 18 – Accounting, Agricultural Sciences, Business Studies, Dramatic Arts, Economics, Engineering Graphics and Design, Geography, History, Consumer Studies, Information Technology, Languages, Life Sciences, Mathematics, Mathematical Literacy, Music, Physical Sciences, Religion Studies and Visual Arts.

Now a mark of above 50 per cent in any four subjects, excluding Life Orientation, will meet the minimum requirement.

In a nutshell then, a matriculant would have to accomplish the following in order to be admitted to a Bachelors degree:

• Pass one official language at Home Language level with 40 per cent or more.

• Pass four subjects with 50 per cent or more (excluding Life Orientation).

• Pass two other subjects with a minimum of 30 per cent.

• Meet the language requirement for entry to further study (30 per cent or more)
