#JusticeForLee: Update: Case postponed for umpteenth time

‘This is unacceptable’

The family of the missing three-year-old, Liyaqat ‘Lee’ Mentoor was left frustrated and asking many questions after the case was postponed for the umpteenth time.

The accused in the case, the 29-year-old Onke Hartin Mashinini, appeared briefly in the Roodepoort Magistrates’ Court on 29 November, but the magistrate, Delize Smith, was left with no other choice than to postpone the case – again.

Lee was in Mashinini’s care when he went missing on 16 March this year, and he stands accused of murder, defeating the ends of justice, kidnapping and child neglect.

Mashinini’s appearance was delayed by a missing charge sheet, and when it was found, the State Prosecutor indicated that they could not proceed with the case, as the Investigating Officer had not taken the docket to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

“Because of this, no feedback or further instructions have been received, and, once again, the family was told the case was postponed. And, once again, we will have to come to court, waiting for answers, “ said Estelle Delport, the family representative.

Mashinini will remain in custody until his next appearance on 12 December.
