So you think you might be a diabetic?

What is even more concerning is that many are not getting the right treatment for it.

The fact that thousands of Roodepoort residents are living with diabetes is very worrisome for local general practitioner, Dr Jaco Botha.

Since 14 November is World Diabetes Day, Jaco and his team at Health Worx at Valley View Retail Centre on Robert Broom Drive has decided to host a two-and-a-half-week diabetes awareness campaign by offering free screenings.

Even though these screenings are free to Discovery Health medical aid patients, those who do not have a medical aid will not be shown away.

The shocking diabetes statistics should be enough to have you make an appointment at Health Worx immediately.

According to the International Diabetes Federation, over 425 million people are currently living with diabetes. Most of these cases are Type 2 diabetes, which is largely preventable through regular physical activity, a healthy and balanced diet, and the promotion of healthy living environments. One in two people currently living with diabetes is undiagnosed. Early diagnosis and treatment are key to prevent the complications of diabetes and achieve healthy outcomes.

When you do decide to get checked out by Jaco and his team, a series of screening tests will be done. The results of these tests, which should not take longer than 20 minutes, will give you a clear understanding of your health in terms of diabetes and the way forward will be discussed if necessary. Jaco said that they also offer a great support service to their diabetes patients, costing them less money and effort since everything is done by email.

If you are interested in having yourself checked out, give Health Worx a call on 010 600 0000, or visit them between 14 and 30 November from 8am to 4pm. Alternatively, you can send a diabetes-related email to cdebotha@gmail.com.
