Unauthorised driver causes fatal crash

EMS was unaware of ambulance being driven out.

On Saturday, 3 November, a fatal crash occurred on Main Reef Road near Chamdor when a City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Service (EMS) ambulance collided with a pedestrian.

The ambulance was booked into the workshop operated by the City’s external service provider because of unusual noises emanating from the locking differential.

The interim investigations have led to the belief that an unauthorised employee at the workshop took the ambulance for a drive and caused the accident.

The City’s EMS was unaware that the ambulance had been driven out of the workshop by the employee and no permission had been given.

A criminal case has been opened with the Police.
