Young man shot three times during armed robbery

Neighbours thought they were being attacked.

A man, aged in his 20s, who lives on Mopanie Street, Lindhaven, with his girlfriend and son and his parents, was shot three times during an armed robbery that took place at about 3am on Sunday, 4 November.

According to his neighbour, Judette Nell, she and her husband were woken up at about 3am by the sound of glass shattering. At first they thought there were intruders in their house. Her husband got up to investigate and then saw his neighbour, who for now wants to remain anonymous, stumbling out the front door and collapsing on the lawn. Nel’s husband called to him, asking whether he had been shot, to which he replied, “Yes”. The way he spoke indicated to the Nels that his injuries were serious, so they contacted their security company, asking for an ambulance to be dispatched.

Paramedics and later the surgeon, discovered that one bullet had lodged just behind his bladder, one in his pelvis and a third went right through his arm. The man was first taken to a private hospital, which demanded R15 000 before he could be admitted, and a further R350 000 for the operation/s. The family then asked that he rather be transferred to a state hospital, in this instance, the Helen Joseph Hospital.

It is believed that the intruders gained entry to the house by using a wooden chair on the veranda to break one of the large windows of the house. They were most likely confronted by the victim. They fled with a flat screen TV.
