Maragon Ruimsig problem solvers outdo themselves with hat-trick at Tournament of Minds
Maragon entered one primary school and two high school teams into the competition this year.
At the second instalment of the South African leg of Tournament of Minds (Tom), Maragon Ruimsig walked away with three awards, including one top national prize.
Tom originated in Australia 30 years ago, and has since been hosted in, among other, New Zealand, South Africa, Hong Kong, Thailand, India, Cambodia, Indonesia and Singapore. In 2017, ADvTECH hosted the SA leg of the competition for the first time, and this year Maragon Ruimsig entered three teams.
Tom is the biggest problem-solving competition in the world, and offers learners the unique opportunity to put their creative problem-solving skills to work in solving given challenges. The challenges are given in four categories: Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (Stem), Language Literature, Social Sciences and the Arts. A team consists of seven learners from various grades. They select the challenge that they want to tackle and work completely independently to solve it, which they present on Tournament Day.
Maragon Ruimsig Primary School was the national winner in the Social Sciences category and the High School secured two second places in the Stem and Arts categories.
