Domestic workers acquire medical knowledge from professionals

Two of the important medical topics covered were breast and cervical cancer, as October was breast cancer month.

Domestic workers from all over the Little Falls and Strubens Valley areas gathered at Klein Pikkewyn Nursery School for a workshop on health tips they could use in their profession.

The workshop, which was a huge success, was held by Let’s Be Wise – a domestic workers’ forum – in association with Klein Pikkewyn, which has made its facilities available to the forum for any event they may host. The domestic workers forum was founded by Miriam Seleke in 2016, with the hope of making the Little Falls and Strubens Valley areas safer for domestic workers, while also aiming to educate the women on various topics that could enhance their skills as domestics.

One such skill is health/ medical knowledge, a topic they addressed thanks to professional nurses who provided insight at the workshop on Saturday, 27 October. Two of the important medical topics covered were breast and cervical cancer, as October was breast cancer month.

According to Miriam, the workshop more than served its purpose, as the women were able to learn a lot from the nurses. “It was so educational and the domestic workers asked questions where they didn’t understand, so it was very, very informative,” she said providing feedback afterwards.

Miriam was also beyond grateful for the many people who made the informative workshop possible. “The forum thanks all the women who attended, and we encourage them to do more,” she said. “Also thank you to the employers who let their domestics attend this important workshop on women in health.”
