Charter speakers finish inside top three at nationals

Charter's smoothest junior orators returned home with commendable podium finishes.

Unfortunately for Charter College, its matric contestants were unable attend the South African Literacy Association (Sala) annual public speaking competitions due to their exams, but the two junior speakers at the nationals earned Charter a double podium finish.

Sala hosts these public speaking competitions every year, giving children from Grade 1 to 12 the chance to showcase their public speaking talents. This year, Charter College sent their own contingent to take part in the competition, with a host of their speakers initially taking part in the national semi-final round.

From there, five progressed to the national final round which was set to take place on 13 October in Witbank. Unfortunately for the three Grade 12 learners, they weren’t able to attend due to a schedule clash, but nonetheless Jean Erasmus (Grade 9) and Yaseen Motara (Grade 8) set off hoping to make their school proud.

The two learners spoke well, and outdid themselves by both earning podium finishes in the grade groups. Yaseen would end the competition with a third place, while Jean would return home with a silver medal.
