The Roodepoort/ Krugersdorp SPCA needs your help to educate our youth

'The book is a wonderful educational tool that will make our school visits much more fun'

“If we cannot educate our children now, there will be no future for any animals on our planet,” said Mandy Cattanach, the manager at the Roodepoort/ Krugersdorp SPCA.

She added that, according to research, animal abuse and child abuse goes hand in hand, and explained, “It is a well known fact that many serial killers started out by abusing animals, and, after getting away with it, they progressed to abusing – and killing – people. Another huge concern for the SPCA is the many complaints we investigate where children are involved. We have also seen that more and more children are getting caught up in the dog-fighting epidemic. And, for us, the only viable solution is human education.”

She said that the SPCA wants to show all children that animals have rights, feelings and emotions, just like humans, and, in the process, teach them about empathy, respect for animals, proper animal care and animal behaviour.

“We can do this by using the Lucky activity book as an educational tool. The book tells the story of two children who find a puppy, which they want to take to the animal clinic. Along the way, they encounter several people and situations. There is an activity on almost every page for the children to complete, before they can go further with the story. The book is aimed at children between the ages of six and nine years old, and costs R20 per copy. It’s available in Afrikaans, English, Xhosa and Zulu,” she said.

The SPCA would like to purchase 500 of these activity books and is appealing to business owners in the community that are also passionate about educating children on good animal welfare, to assist.

“The book is very educational and will assist us in making our school visits fun and activity-based. Companies or individuals who are interested in making a donation towards this worthy cause, can send an email to manager@rdptspca.co.za,” she concluded.
