SANBS reaches out for new blood locally

SANBS donor relations practitioner, Jade Jacobs, explained the aim of the blood drive and reception in the area.

With the December period nearing and blood being an essential fluid during the festive season due to the high number of accidents, the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) has launched a #NewBlood project to encourage donors.

A mobile drive was held at Strubens Valley Shopping Centre on 20 October, where donors popped by to donate blood locally.

SANBS donor relations practitioner, Jade Jacobs, explained the aim of the blood drive and reception in the area. “SANBS has launched the #NewBlood project with the aim of increasing our donor panel with new donors and getting inactivate and lapsed donors back,” she said.

As you normally find blood drives at various malls, Jade explained why they decided to bring in the drive closer to the community. “I thought we should bring it closer to the suburb so that we can allow the donors to come in as this creates versatility for them,” she explained, thanking Curves and Lifco for assisting in bringing the blood drive to the centre.

About 40 donors were expected by the nurses on the day. Jade also said that the drive at the centre was the first of many as they were granted permission to run a blood drive at least once a month.

She also encouraged prospective donors to come forward next month or at any blood drive. “We have superb clinic staff who are trained to put a first time donor at ease,” she urged.

Retailers that contributed to making the day a success were thanked by Jade.
