Welties hooter chicks out for all to see

The chicks have finally started to prance around and do their own thing, once again after the first rains.

The three chicks belonging to Hedwig and Hermione are finally being left to mind their own in the flower pot at Loving Child Montessori.

Spotted Eagle Owls are known for nesting on window ledges of buildings, and our two owls initially made the school their home in August last year by turning an old flower pot on the window ledge into their nest. Hermione and Hedwig did leave once their eaglets had fledged though, but weren’t gone for long however, and soon returned to the flower pot nest in April/ May this year.

According to Loving Child owner, Aadila Ismail, the owls rarely lay three eggs, and it’s even rarer that all three hatch and survive. But, the parliament of owls in Welties has defied all those odds as they laid three eggs, all of which hatched.

Despite being against all the odds, all three chicks, Naledi, Thando, and Dimakatso hatched in mid-August and right on cue have started spreading their wings. “It seems like every year after the first rains these fluff balls have a growth spurt and mummy leaves them to be by themselves in the flower pot,” Aadila said in a Facebook post.

Aadila has previously assured us that the owls simply do their own thing as all they do is not chase them away. “They just take care of themselves, we don’t bother them and they don’t bother us,” she said. The chicks are expected to leave the nest and area completely in December.
