Readers react to proposed Firearms Control Act amendment

Most residents shared the same sentiments.

A leaked document, a proposed amendment to the Firearms Control Act that will make it nearly impossible to own a gun or renew your licence, has been met with the same reaction across the board from our readers.

According to the alleged draft Bill, self-defence and protection of property or another person will no longer be accepted as a valid or satisfactory reason to own a firearm. The Constitutional Court even found in June that gun ownership is not protected by the Bill of Rights and is a “privilege”. Most of our readers seemed to share the same sentiment, with many treating the alleged proposed Bill with contempt. This is what they had to say:

(We published comments verbatim, including the use of punctuation marks)

• Wade Seafield wrote “So in future only criminals will have guns!!!??”.

• Ronel Campbell Swiegelaar said “there are words in my mouth but not suitable to use on a public forum”.

• Nepstar Gaonewe pointed out that it “is it not wise that before we being disarmed that government must collect unlicensed fire arms first from the street ? In other words we will be disarmed and thugs left heavily armed .. ja nê .. new south Africa”.

• Melissa Sheldon was concerned that “they will be using our legal weapons to commit murder and other crimes and we will be jailed for it”.

• Jax Pires El-hage wrote “they can’t even uphold simply laws. What makes anyone think they will be able to get this right. Its laughable”.

(For more comments, take a look at the print article in next week’s Record).
