Don’t wait for last minute to apply

Prospective students tend to wait until the last day to apply.

Prospective students are urged not to wait for the last day to apply for admission at Unisa. Instead, they should apply while there is still plenty of time.

Applications for admission to the 2019 academic year for undergraduate qualifications, honours degrees and postgraduate diplomas closed on Monday, 1 October after being open for more than a month. However, prospective students apparently tend to wait until the last day to apply.

“We always advise students not to wait until the last date to apply for admission at Unisa, but they never listen. That is why they get disappointed when they come on the last day and find long queues or are turned back because of wrong documents and cannot come back the next day,” said Unisa Florida’s Department of Student Admission and Registration officer, Lerato Sete.

According to Lerato, the university is faced with this problem every semester when applications and registrations are opened. They have to work extra hours to attend to everyone, which is not fair to them, because when admission and registration opens, only a few students come in, but when it’s the last day then everyone comes, causing a stampede.

“It is not advisable for students to wait till the last hour to apply or register. On the last day, the online system becomes congested, causing it to go offline. Then students end up going back home and missing out on a semester. Students must refrain from doing last minute applications to avoid long queues and disappointment,” said Movunwazi Sonto.
