Memorandum read and delivered to government officials

Klaas read out the concerns and demands of the residents in the presence of the Honeydew Police station commander, Brigadier Anesh Maharaj.

The memorandum of demand for interventions regarding safety concerns by residents of Zandspruit was handed over to the Public Liaison Officer (PLO), Sonnyboy Mmatli. He is from the office of the MEC for Safety at Honeydew Police Station where the march concluded on Wednesday, 19 September.

Residents of Zandspruit, particularly women, were marching against the poor service delivery by Honeydew Police Station.

“We women of Zandspruit have come together to take a stand against the abuse of women and children. More concerning is the government’s lack of response to issues of safety our community is facing. We demand that the Gauteng Community Safety MEC, Sizakele Molabane Nkosi take serious steps in addressing our concerns,” the leader of the march, Nomande Klaas said.

She added that women and children are living in fear of being victims of criminals who freely roam the streets, despite their actions having been reported to officials.

Klaas read out the concerns and demands of the residents in the presence of the Honeydew Police station commander, Brigadier Anesh Maharaj.

Some of the demands included that a satellite police station be re-established in Zandspruit, police visibility be improved, police respond quickly and timely to complaints, criminals be arrested, taverns and shebeens close on time as required by law, and bail be denied to drug dealers, murderers and rapists.
They also demanded that the community be educated on the CPF policy so that the programme can benefit them. She concluded by demanding that the MEC establish a commission or task team to look into pending cases, the poor state of service delivery and the ill treatment of women at Honeydew Police Station.
