Play your part in bringing change to the City

City to improve the environment.

The Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, councillor Herman Mashaba, is pleased to officially launch the City of Johannesburg’s partnership with Global Citizen for the A Re Sebetseng clean-up campaign. “With Global Citizen’s mission being to build the largest movement of people taking action to end extreme poverty by 2030, it is only fitting that we combine our efforts towards this objective. Good progress has been made in this regard. So far, over 300 000 tonnes of waste has been collected since the launch in 2017,” said Mashaba.

A Re Sebetseng (meaning ‘let’s work’ in Sesotho) is a monthly call to action that encourages City employees and residents to volunteer in their numbers, and work together to turn Johannesburg into a City where residents can live, work and play in a healthy environment. This campaign will include educating global citizens about reducing plastic and encourage the recycling of waste.

The campaign will kick off on Saturday, 15 September, which is also World Clean Up Day. With the support of Mashaba, councillors, City departments and regional offices, Johannesburg residents are encouraged to unite with the rest of the world for one goal – a cleaner world.

The City will provide bags and gloves to all participants. These can be collected at City walk-in centres, depots, clinics and libraries. Some lucky participants in the clean-up will stand a chance to win general and VIP tickets to the Global Citizen Festival Mandela 100.

Clean-up activations will take place across all seven regions of the City (Region A to G) between September and November. Dates and locations will be communicated.

These are the first locations that Mashaba will visit:

Region A: Jukskei River between Beverly Agricultural Holding & Glenferness, Lonehill

Region B: Cnr Main Road and Millar Street, Sophiatown

Region D: Elias Motsoledi & Phera Streets, Mofolo South

Winners will be announced at the end of each activation across the above-mentioned regions.

The major partners for the Global Citizen Festival Mandela 100 are Presenting and The Motsepe Foundation. Other major partners include: House of Mandela, Johnson & Johnson, Cisco, Coca-Cola, Nedbank, Vodacom, Big Concerts, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Goalkeepers, Eldridge Industries and Associate Partners, HP and Microsoft. The event is taking place at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg, on 2 December 2018 and will be headlined by Beyoncé and JAY-Z, Cassper Nyovest, D’banj, Ed Sheeran, Eddie Vedder, Femi Kuti, Pharrel Williams and Chris Martin, Sho Madjozi, Tiwa Savage, Usher and Wizkid.
