Two highs schools in Mogale City, namely Ahmed Timol in Azaadville and Thathulwazi in Kagiso had some of its learners empowered through a programme sponsored by Silverstar.
The 24 Grade 10 learners together with six teachers recently underwent a Columba Leadership programme, which was a six-day intense training camp focusing on values-based leadership.
This programme, which is a high-impact and peer-driven leadership initiative for high schools in economically disadvantaged communities, has been running for seven years in the Mogale City region.
The programme encourages the youth to be self-motivated, work-ready, and employable. Principals, educators (called values champions on the programme), and Grades 10 to 12 learners work together to assess their school’s challenges and implement solutions, become engaged in social-change projects, and enable learners to develop critical skills for life and work.
Over the years the project undertaken by the Columba learners has made a difference in schools by supporting a school feeding scheme, establishing a library and a book club, cooking for the Grade 12s when they have weekend study sessions at school, a school food garden, and addressing learner issues such as late-coming, bullying, gambling, discipline in classes, substance abuse, and even teen pregnancy.
