Beloved local biker dies

Outpouring of condolences on social media for the fallen rider.

This past Saturday (8 September) motorcycle fanatic Vernon Houreld lost his life in a motorcycle accident on Christiaan de Wet Road.

At this stage details as to the cause of the accident are unclear. One version is that a vehicle smashed into the back of his motorcycle, while another said that a motorist made a U-turn in front of him. Houreld allegedly died on impact.

An outpouring of condolences on Facebook proved that he was loved by many, both in the biker community and outside.

Chanté Dominique Menego wrote: “You were like my role model the way you took life and how you didn’t care what people said, or what happened. You kept me on my toes and you were there for me when I needed it most. Thank you so much, uncle Vernon Houreld, but now you are my riding angel, but forever my devil rider.”

“So this morning I found out a good friend of mine passed away yesterday. RIP Vernon Houreld. This planet needed more people like you, not less,” wrote Angeline Taljaard.

Jonathan Lowe wrote, “Vern, you always used to say ‘We’re not here for a long time, we’re here for a good time’. Thank you for all the good times that we shared, my friend. I will miss you.”

Houreld will also be remembered for his loyal attendance of the Marthinus Pelser murder case in support of baby Deon Rothman’s mother and grandmother.

The Record is in the process of getting comment from Houreld’s family and motorcycle club.
