West Rand Toastmasters hosted another successful evening

The theme for the evening was Pathways, the new learning programme

The West Rand Toastmasters’ recent meeting was filled with a lot of fun, laughter, learning, and – of course – talking.

The meeting was opened by the Club’s Sergeant-At-Arms, Ernest Watkins, who not only welcomed everyone, but also announced the theme of the evening (Pathways), as well as the word of the evening (Loquacious). The word was very relevant, as it means talkative.

The Ice Breaker Speech was delivered by the Club’s newest member, Richard van Leeuwen. His speech, entitled One Life, Live it, delivered a very powerful message. He told his life story, of how he studied law and industrial engineering, which led to him starting his own business. But, the amount of money he earned did not increase his happiness, and he came to the conclusion that materialism is not the answer, but personal growth is.

Esther Dreyer, the Club’s President, delivered a speech on the history of the Christian wars between the Catholics and Protestants during the Middle Ages. She was followed by Glen Campbell, whose speech was a funny recollection of the time she boarded the wrong train, and was assisted by two kind engineers who helped her get home.

Lynette Harris gave a technical presentation on the Pathways programme, and the evening was concluded with the impromptu speeches, which were led by the Table Topics Master, Ernest Watkins. The members had to speak about various items he had brought from his grocery store.

The winners for the evening were:

• Glen Campbell was awarded the trophy for the Best Speech

• Max Kaan was awarded the trophy for the Best Evaluator

• Malcolm Harris was awarded the trophy for the Best Impromptu Speech

• Lynette Harris was awarded the trophy for the Best Contributor
