“We are receiving overwhelmingly positive responses from Johannesburg motorists. Texting whilst driving can lead to serious accidents, injuries and even death. Focus and be safe on the road, said the Member of the Mayoral Committee for Public Safety, councillor Michael Sun.
The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) recently embarked on a Motorist Pledge Campaign under the banner, ‘I do not text and drive’. According to the JMPD spokesperson, Captain Wayne Minnaar, if you’re driving at 86 kilometres per hour and read and then reply to a text in 10 seconds, you would have travelled the length of more than two rugby fields without your eyes and concentration being on the road. Don’t let your text be your last words.
Texting and driving increases your likelihood of being involved in a collision by 23 times.

On the morning of Thursday, 27 July, the Chief of Police, Mr David Tembe; the Executive Mayor, councillor Herman Mashaba, and MMC Sun were hosted by a well-known radio station, to chat about the campaign. They also went out onto the streets and stopped various vehicles to get the drivers to sign a motorist’s pledge that they won’t text and drive. Mashaba also took the pledge that he will never text and drive.
Texting while driving has become the #1 driving distraction for many people. Drivers need to be aware of the dangers and keep their attention on the road, not on their cellphones or other mobile devices.
