Residents get to witness a blood moon
Although not such a rare occurrence, it is one of the longest celestial spectacles people can witness – a blood moon.

The term used to describe the spectacle that was visible for about three hours this past Friday (27 July), is not a scientific concept, but a colloquial one.

During a total lunar eclipse direct sunlight on the Moon is completely blocked by the Earth’s shadow, causing it to turn a reddish or coppery colour – hence the name.
The next blood moon will be visible in January 2019.

Local resident Angelique Schutte, who is quite an apt photographer, managed to capture this event beautifully this past Friday.
