Residents complain about South Road not being fixed

South Road is a multi-million rand cost project and it will take time.

Residents of Roodepoort posted on social media that they were not happy with the fact that Peter Road was fixed within a few days yet South Road has not been fixed for almost a year.

“Why is Peter Road in Ruimsig being repaired immediately but South Road in Lindhaven is still closed after almost one year? Is it because rich and influential people live there?” a resident commented on Facebook.

Another resident said, “If Peter Road could be fixed in a matter of a few days, why can’t the same happen to South Road?”

Peter Road was closed only for a few day and got fixed. What about South Road, residents asked. Photo: Supplied.

The Record contacted JRA spokesperson, Bertha Peters-Scheepers, to inform her about the numerous complaints from the residents.

Peters-Scheepers said, “The two issues are quite different. Peter Road is a reinstatement after a contractor digging up the road caused the water pipe (culvert) collapse. The damage was also not that severe. In the case of the South Road bridge there is severe damage which needs to be repaired at a multi-million rand cost. New bridge designs needed to be developed and JRA budget allocated, along with a number of licence applications [that needed to be considered], which all take time.”

Apparently Vumatel and Johannesburg Water personnel who were working in the Ruimsig area did not follow the correct procedures, which lead the road to collapse. Motorists were advised to avoid the intersection of Peter and Walnut Roads and had to drive on dusty detours.

Vumatel and JRA worked together to repair the road within a few days.
