Residents driving the streets of Roodepoort are frustrated at the sight of numbers of election posters still attached to street poles. They should have been removed weeks ago.
“Elections took place on 23 May, yet more than six weeks later, the posters are still hanging on the poles, starting to fade and looking tatty,” said Kloofendal resident, Nicci Clausen.
“I contacted the Ward 85 councillor, Sonya Meyer, who advised me to contact the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC). The IEC said penalties are supposed to be paid as it is apparently an infringement of the law to not remove these posters. The IEC said the non-removal of the posters was not their problem and suggested I contact the ANC candidate … I tried contacting the ANC but was also unsuccessful,” she added.

According to the Outdoor Advertising By-laws, political parties have 21 days after the conclusion of the elections to remove all their campaign posters. It has been more than 21 working days (ended on 21 June), yet residents still see DA, ANC and EFF posters hanging on the street poles.
According to the Johannesburg Metro Police Department’s spokesperson, Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar, there is a fine of R200 per day for each party if posters are not removed. “Residents can lodge a complaint with by-law management, as this is a violation of the City of Johannesburg’s by-laws. Their helpdesk number is 011 490 1630. The complaints will then be investigated,” said Minnaar.
