No firetrucks a misconception

In 2017 City of Johannesburg spent R189 million on 28 new firetrucks.

According to Johannesburg Emergency Management Services spokesperson, Robert Mulaudzi, residents’ complaints that there are no fire trucks in Roodepoort are unfounded.

Not only did the City of Johannesburg purchase 28 new fire trucks at a cost of R189 million in 2017, but on 13 June four new ones were handed over at Florida Fire Station. One of the new trucks was allocated to Florida Fire Station and the other three went to Lawley, Ivory Park and Eldorado Park Fire Stations. Mulaudzi said the Roodepoort Fire Station does indeed have its own truck.

This comes after a fire broke out on Sunday (1 June) at the water reservoir on Mimosa Street. At first it was thought that the pump station had caught fire, but later it was alleged that a Vumatel power box was on fire. A resident said that when she called for a fire truck she allegedly was told that there “were no fire trucks”. Residents then had to put out the fire themselves.

Mulaudzi said that he was unaware of Sunday’s incident.
