Sewer line upgrade contractors in Weltevreden Park have been cautioned against negligence after raw sewage was seen leaking into the green belt.
The contractors were blamed for the incident which escalated into a meeting involving an engineer and various Residents’ Associations (RAs) in the area.

Ward 126 councillor, David Brand, who was part of the recent meeting, explained what happened at the meeting. “We had a meeting with the consulting engineer and the contractors, and explained to them just what thin ice they are on because they have the same negligence problem – they break pipes and don’t follow operational procedures and we are left to deal with sewer leaks in the green belt,” Brand explained.
Brand admitted that accidents happen in construction, but emphasised that the sewer leaks were caused by negligence. “In the meeting, the engineer sat down and re-defined the processes that need to be followed because they were to blame for the sewer leaks,” he further explained.
Brand concluded by saying, “Hopefully we’ve addressed this matter by meeting with the engineer who is the responsible person for explaining the procedure that the contractors have been neglecting to follow”.
