[WATCH] Mmusi in Krugersdorp: ‘I am sick and tired of racism’

"If you drive in a car, and you look into the rear view mirror, that's where you will end up."

Democratic Alliance National Leader, Mmusi Maimane, visited Krugersdorp on Friday, 15 June and delivered a speech that gave everyone in the Centenary Hall goosebumps.

Mmusi started his speech by saying how at home he felt being in Krugersdorp once again.

“Many of you might not know this, but I lived not far from here. I lived in Noordheuwel. This is where I met my wife. When they say the West Rand is the Best Rand it’s the truth, because they produce the most beautiful people here.”

He continued, saying that he was so happy when the DA took over Krugersdorp, and then so heartbroken when the ANC forced them out of power.

“But if you drive in a car, and you look into the rear view mirror, that’s where you will end up. We aren’t committed to produce a better future for our parents, we’re here to produce a better future for our children,” he said.

“Our country has been divided for too long. We were told that Noordheuwel belonged to this crowd, Kenmare belongs to that crowd, and Kagiso belonged to that crowd, and so we’ve all grown up like that. But surely that’s not the South Africa we want. In truth, we want a South Africa for all. We have a vision where black people, white people, coloured people and Indian people can stand together and work together, for the prosperity of all South Africans.”

Pointing to the racially diverse crowd in front of him, he said this is the future South Africans want to see. The crowd replied with loud applause.

“In the DA, I will not put up with racists, just like I would not put up with anybody who’s dividing the people. There are too many things happening in South Africa today that are trying to divide us. Our future is a future where children, regardless of where they come from, will stand up together and be first and foremost proud South Africans before they’re any other thing. We want one South Africa for all.”

He also addressed issues such as poverty, freedom, equality, land expropriation and the unfairness of knowing a politician and having more rights because of it.

He said that people believed once Zuma was gone and Cyril Ramaphosa was in, their problems would be over.

“And then Zuma went and Ramaphosa came in and we still have problems. It’s not Ramaphosa I have a problem with, it’s the ANC I have a problem with. Because it’s the same ANC that let its people pay for the mistakes Zuma made.”

Provincial leader for the DA, John Moodey, and caucus leader of the DA in Mogale, Jacques Hoon, also addressed the Mogale City community.
