Three new members welcomed at Westrand Toastmasters

During the recent meeting of the Westrand Toastmasters club, three new members were welcomed.
The meeting took place at the Discovery Bowling Club, where the theme for the evening was ‘Winter’.
Malcolm Harris, the Club President, handled the induction ceremony for the new members, Ernest Greenwood (Randburg), Yogan Naicker (Randburg) and Dawid Eygelaar (Roodepoort).
After the ceremony, the meeting was called to order by Lynette Harris, the Vice President for Public Relations, who also took on the role of Toastmaster of the Evening, which she performed, as always, with much light-hearted banter.
The evening’s proceedings were kicked off with the toast of the evening, which was proposed by Claude Joshua. Claude used the opportunity to thank the club’s outgoing Executive Committee Members and everyone toasted to future accomplishments.
Next up were the prepared speeches for the evening. These speeches were based on storytelling, and kept the audience well entertained.
First up was Cheron McNab, who told a story about a camping experience, and said, “During the night, my fellow campers and I heard noises which we did not recognise. The next morning, after a thorough investigation, we found a wild African kitten which we rescued. It is now living on a farm.” Her message to everyone was to rescue endangered species.
Glen Campbell spoke about her childhood memories of a grandfather clock. “I purchased a pendulum clock when I reached the grand age of 21, and had a lot of trouble trying to get it repaired. I went through a lot of internet advertisements, which, in the end, taught me to not believe everything I read, because my clock no longer ticks or tocks,” she said.
Stephanie Greenwood had everyone on the edge of their seats with her interpretive reading entitled The Highway Man, which was a very descriptive and dark story with a ghostly ending.
The agenda was changed to include a joke master, instead of the usual table topics/ impromptu speaking. This role was taken on by Lynette Harris.
The winners for the night were Glen Campbell (best speech), Yogan Naicker (best joke) and Lynette Harris (best contributor).
