Warning to motorists who use Christiaan de Wet Road

Christiaan de Wet Road carries high traffic volumes on a daily basis.

The aftermath of a oil spill has left a local motorist concerned about the safety of Christiaan de Wet Road. “The road is cracking and looks like it will soon collapse,” said the concerned resident, Noreen Beets.

The oil spill occurred on 29 January, when an oil tanker travelling on Wilgerood Road failed to make the right-hand turn into Christiaan de Wet Road towards Ontdekkers Road, ended up in the ditch and spilt its load of oil on the road.

Noreen has lived in Roodepoort since 1998 and often uses Christiaan de Wet Road to travel to work. “Since the accident, I have noted that the road keeps on cracking, and bearing in mind that Christiaan de Wet Road carries high traffic volumes on a daily basis, I believe this problem, which is getting worse by the day, should be addressed quickly,” she said.

“I am also concerned about the oil that split into the river that starts from Ontdekkers Road and links to the wetland near Makro and Clearwater Mall,” she added.

The Record has contacted the Johannesburg Roads Agency about these issues and is awaiting comment.
